Computer troubleshooting is a something everyone who has a computer will do at some point. If we have an older computer, chances are we shall be spending more time troubleshooting. Even users of new computers will invariably find themselves trying to figure out what's wrong when their computer freezes or gives an error. Most of the times it's not as important to find out which exactly caused a problem as it is to determine how can stop it.
The Basics
There are basic computer troubleshooting techniques that everyone who has experience working with computers uses, even professional computer technicians. What we want to do is narrow down the possibilities as to what could be causing the problem. Most of the time after we determine the problem, we don't even fix the problem as much as stop the problem. Computers are the most complicated that many things can be gone wrong at any time and the best thing to do is often to start over and start simpler.
The first thing we do when troubleshooting is to wait and see if the problem goes away. Often, with any little bit of patience, the problem will resolve by itself. Then we can start shutting things down. Firstly to stop the program and restart it. If that doesn't work, close all of the programs. If it doesn't work, restart to the computer. The next step is to reinstall the application and perhaps reinstall the operating system.
Research
If restarting the program or the computer doesn't fix the problem, we shall want to do some research before we reinstall the operating system. Often just a general Internet search can be found articles about similar problems. But it is only helps if it is a common problem and even then it may not give me all the information i want. Look at the software and hardware manufacturer's website. Do a search on the site for the errors or problems we are having. If we can't find the solution in either of these places, we can search on the operating system's website. Our last step is to ask friends or computer professionals. If all else fails, we shall likely be reinstalling the operating system.
